Portrait of a Breastcancer Survivor

Hello, my name is Nidia Alire-Hilton. I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer March 2018, the month after my husband Tod and I got married on the big island of Hawaii. The cruel joke was prior to our wedding I was known to say “as is baby, no warranty!” Little did we know the following month our lives would change significantly.

I am so grateful for many things, among them being diagnosed in the early stage, having stellar surgeons and care team, successful treatments, surgeries and recovery, being declared NED (no evidence of disease) at my 3 year mark, and just celebrating my 5 year cancer free milestone this year. I am beyond grateful for my support from family and friends, and especially my mom, dad, and incredible husband. During my hospital stay of 5 nights my mom would take the night shift and husband the day shift. Their support and constant presence gave me the extra strength, and sometimes laughs I needed.

2024 marks my 57th trip around the sun and 5 years cancer free. It is those two things that inspired me to participate in the Worthy project. A perfect opportunity to celebrate me! This experience gave me the space to feel empowered, authentic and grateful for who I am.

Nidia Alire-Hilton was part of the Worthy Series photoshoot taken by local Kirkland, WA photographer Shannon Beauclair.
